I'm unable to say for certain why this message may be appearing in this particular case but one thing to check is to make sure that you didn't accidentally disable the smart home skill associated with this device.

"Server is unresponsive" in Alexa app After the big outage last week, I disconnected and reconnected the Alexa skill from my WeMo account and went through the process of removing all the duplicate devices.
I have no problem controlling them from the wemo app/HomeKit. However when controlling them when they are in an Alexa group, it says the server is unresponsive. If I remove the switch from the group and ask Alexa to control it individually all is well.

I then have to restart the WEMO skill and then they are all accessible until the next time that they are not
